Google’s new Feature or Bug

Recently I blogged about maybe links aren’t so important any more, I didn’t want to really give out the example I had found, but Richard Young and Myself where chatting about this early today, and I feel that google has created a Time Machine Bot :

Google Time machine

ok let me try to explain what I mean you will most probably punch holes in this one .. lol

In the real world companies that have traded for many many years build up a natural authority, I’m sure that there are many industries that we don’t know anything about but could recognise a brand, in the UK Singer is a massive sewing machine brand , Singer has been around for 150 years !, but I don’t do sewing I have never SEO’ed a sewing website but I’m brand aware God only knows why lol

possible hole punch, So why don’t singer rank for sewing machines .. ( www.singermachines.co.uk ).. if my theory is correct 150 years of trading and a good aged web presence it should .. so you tell me why it doesn’t ;)

but what about Cheese http://www.teddingtoncheese.co.uk been on the internet since 1999 look at what they looked like in 1999

or Fish take http://www.tropicalfishcentre.co.uk/ look what their site looked like 2000
and finally Bras take http://www.amplebosom.com/ they have been around since 2000

Now Im not saying that these sites shouldn’t be there, in fact anyone who has been trading online for 8 years plus, should have authority of some kind, maybe google just dipped into the past and found sites that where authoritative in their day and are still trading online today.. it’s just a thought ..

Fish Pedicure

Just looking through Google trends today and found that “fish pedicure” is upping on the search index. It’s the latest craze in Spa treatments apparently. I’ll be honest the prospect of having my feet nibbled by a tank of hungry carp doesn’t really appeal. Not to be scoffed at though this treatment is said to be one of the most effective ways to get dead skin off your feet.

Internet Trends

The current economic climate brings new challenges for all businesses. The media of course have latched on to the credit crunch oiling the wheels of panic. We have seen some noticeable changes within SEO too. Some clients have reduced PPC budgets whilst others have only just started a  PPC campaign. As house sales supposedly take a nose dive we notice a marked increase in web development enquiries for those people offering services to the home, enabling people to utilise the space they already have such as loft conversions.

People seemingly are making the most of their current living space and are choosing to do this whilst being energy efficient too.  Speaking to one of our hardware guys here he tells of customers chopping and changing their broadband deals, usually down to word of mouth, one service being better than another but with effectively little price difference at the end of the change.

The power of advertising remains strong and companies that haven’t looked into SEO before are now doing so as they realise its true potential. Those who advertise corporate gifts such as promotional mugs tell us it’s one of the most effective business gifts you can offer.

Maybe links aren’t important anymore

This is so so weird, I have had a feeling for a year or so that Google would move away from Links and Pagerank as we know it today. Well I think we are starting to see the first sign of it, over the last few weeks an industry I work in has had a couple of sites take first page listing, nothing new I hear you say, well if I said I knew the history of one site, would that make a difference …

The site has never had any SEO work on it, even in the early days the site was designed without any thought of search engines (and still is) the only thing that ever changed was 5 years ago I pointed out they should change the title tag from something like home page and I sent them a keyword rich call to action, the on page seo looks weak, on page links are either the brand ( no keywords) or view and click:

nolinks1.jpg

The site has had no new links of any note, but was covered on the BBC and in the newspapers years ago.. So maybe Google just found the BBC links.. unlikely thou..

It’s dead on theme and in fairness should be in the top 20 at least, but it’s the history of the site that’s interesting me. The site was launched 2000, got a make over in 2003, and nothing else has changed apart from an image on the homepage every 4months which is a picture from the off-line catalogue, the site is a pagerank 4, the owner didn’t know what Pagerank was so I can’t get any historical data on that..

Another site in the same sector just popped in at the same time, I rang the owner of that site as well and the same story..

Take from this very small sample what you like, but at present i can’t see any reason why these 2 site have just taken top 10 placements, anyone else seeing this or am I just going mad !

Trifecta - is a betting term isn’t it?

So what’s in a name? Well if you didn’t know I take my whole company at least twice a year Horse Racing and a Trifecta is a Bet, it’s not an easy bet either you must select the first, second and third horses in the correct order ( well that’s a straight trifecta ).. Anyway’s I was a little surprised to see Seomoz name their new widgetbait trifecta, unless Rand has got all blackhat and is going to collect a shit load of trifecta links, then rename the tool and 301 that page to a On-line betting site.. I think I need a holiday :

Blog Strength Score: 100%

What about
what about Trifecta Interactive Marketing where the fuck did that come from .. lol

Yahoo what are you doing ?

I was reading an article on Yahoo news titled : Big Brother Britain ‘going to far’

Big Brother Britain is going a step too far, the UK’s Information Commissioner has warned.

Richard Thomas has spoken out against apparent plans for a massive new Government database which could contain every phone call, text message, email and internet search made by each and every one of us.

Mr Thomas said the proposal raises serious concerns about data protection.

the Original story was from ITN : here

If you look at the Yahoo article you will see that I have made the links in the Yahoo snippet bold instead of actual links, but in my opinion a news article should only link to sources that backs up the article or give a little more information, so why add in more links ?, why would Yahoo do this ?

.. ok we know the answer is seo, but why the fuck are they just doing a text find and replace, without any context to the article I mean “Big Brother Britain” linking to results for a Game show, are we going to see one of George Bushes aids linking to results about plants or HIV ??
What yahoo are doing imo is changing the POV of the article, which is a serious issue for privacy and the first link goes to a game show.. when Microsoft buy you I hope they sack the idiots in charge of these areas !
